The promise of industries reimagined through instrumenting things provides unforeseen value to a whole new group of stakeholders. But with that, also comes some challenges, including those for dev ops teams. Typically the dev ops teams push software and firmware updates and patches out so that they effect only the end user and often enough the hardware, or ‘things’ have a much shorter life span so older models are not as much an issue.

When dealing with devices at scale, whether they be all in a single location or spread across multiple locations, dev ops must now work with a number of players they have not historically had to work with throughout the connected devices supply chain to ensure that these pushes are as seamless as possible with the least amount of disruption or error.

Our panel will provide their experiences with real-time software and firmware updates to multiple devices in a single client location, multiple devices over multiple locations, and single devices over multiple locations. They will share experiences and insights on:

  • Implications of real-time software/firmware updates to multiple hardware products?
  • Repercussions of devices not producing due to updates?
  • Technology needs/capabilities?
  • Who owns: software dev team or IT team?
  • Ability for device owner to control updates? Repercussions of potential backlog of updates that cause software issues
  • Security implications - do networks need to be accessed for software?
