Big Week for Cyber: White House EO & WannaCry Ransomware Attack

The world experienced an unprecedented cyberattack that some researchers say has similarities to hacks conducted by North Korea. As technology moves from the purely digital realm to bringing the physical world online, data is growing increasingly valuable — and vulnerable.

The WannaCry ransomware attack of the past few days has reportedly affected a staggering 300,000 computers at 10,000 companies in 150 countries. In case you haven’t already received the memo, the issue of information and data security has already moved from the IT department to the corner office, the board room, and the situation room.

The cyber threat is a trending topic in the media this week. Just a few examples:

  • Indifference to the cyber crime threat is no longer an option (Financial Times)
  • Researchers say global cyber attack similar to North Korean hacks (Reuters)
  • Hackers threaten to release upcoming Disney movie – but which one? (Mashable)
  • Cybersecurity stocks boom in wake of ransomware attack (The Guardian)
  • The Best Cybersecurity Investment You Can Make Is Better Training (Harvard Business Review)
  • Cybersecurity community lauds executive order (The Hill)
  • Missing protection: Corporate B2B privacy policies (Computerworld)

And, just last week the White House released the Trump Administration’s first cybersecurity executive order, Strengthening the Cybersecurity of Federal Networks and Critical Infrastructure, highlighting three key priorities: Cybersecurity of Federal Networks, Cybersecurity of Critical Infrastructure, and Cybersecurity for the Nation.

Against this backdrop, MassTLC is debuting the Massachusetts Security Initiative, an industry-led effort to foster innovation, education, workforce development, enhanced cyber readiness and resilience within the Massachusetts technology sector through information sharing, mentorship, and collaboration. Core to the initiative is the CyberMA platform, a regional hub driving state-wide initiatives and a bridge to CyberUSA and its regional Cyber affiliates across the nation.

Through the initiative, members will be able to:

  1. Take advantage of programming, networking, community building, and info sharing on the CyberMA/CyberUSA platform
  2. Utilize the threat-intelligence exchange via TruSTAR Technology’s privacy-preserving collaboration platform. (For a limited time MassTLC and CyberMA members will receive a complimentary license to the TruStar platform.)
  3. Access discounted rates for Cyber Secure America, which provides a voice in helping to shape cyber policy decisions in Washington and the opportunity to engage with key government decision makers

The synergies between MassTLC’s security community and CyberUSA provided a perfect opportunity to keep Massachusetts at the forefront of securing our increasingly tech-enabled world on an inter-state and federal level.

MassTLC will kick off the Massachusetts Security Initiative and CyberMA at a launch event on Monday, May 22nd, featuring:

  • Rob Joyce, Special Assistant to the President and White House Cybersecurity Coordinator;
  • Rodney Petersen, Director of the National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education (NICE) at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST);
  • Phil Bond, Executive Director, CyberUSA

Join MassTLC’s security community as we launch CyberMA, providing a platform for our region to partner with like-minded people and businesses across the nation to share insights, access an affordable, easily navigated, real-time threat sharing platform, and provide coordinated advocacy on a state and federal level.
