Monotype

LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/monotype

Twitter: @Monotype

What: Helvetica Now is a dramatically improved version of the world’s most popular typeface: Helvetica. Helvetica has transcended type and design and has become part of the cultural fabric of the world, but it wasn’t originally designed for the digital era. Helvetica Now brings this classic design into the modern age. As typeface needs evolved to meet emerging digital capabilities, Monotype introduced the first digital version of Helvetica, called Neue Helvetica, in 1982. To meet the latest digital challenges that no legacy version could handle, Monotype set out to update the design again. Helvetica Now, the culmination of years of work and innovation from dozens of designers, copes with every manner of high-resolution interface, smart device, laptop screen, and larger-than-life digital print.

How Technology is Used: There are several major innovations and enhancements in Helvetica Now, the first of which is the design in optical sizing. Optical sizing is the practice of creating variations for typefaces at different sizes, like adding more space between smaller letters or opening certain characters up a bit to improve legibility. Helvetica has never before worked well in tiny sizes, and likewise some of its best design features are lost when it has been blown up into large print, so Monotype created three optical sizes: Micro, Text and Display. In addition, a host of alternate characters to give designers greater flexibility and choice in their use of the typeface.

Why it Matters: Helvetica is everywhere. Everyone sees it, reads it and uses it. Helvetica is the default for designers and brands for whom typography means very little, as well as the gold standard for whom type means everything. Helvetica has transcended type and design and has become part of the cultural fabric of the world. The result of all these changes and innovations is that Helvetica is now able to meet the demands of today’s design requirements. Helvetica Now is a giant leap forward, and will allow the Helvetica tradition to live on, today, tomorrow and beyond.
