MIT Team Honored for App Inventor

MassTLC’s 2017 Distinguished Leadership Award will be presented to the MIT App Inventor team at the 2017 Mass Technology Leadership Awards Gala on Thursday, September 14, 2017 at the World Trade Center Boston.

Led by Professor Hal Abelson, the App Inventor team created an intuitive, visual programming environment that allows millions of people around the world to build fully functional apps for smartphones and tablets. Through programs like Technovation that work to help middle and high school aged girls address community challenges, App Inventor is enabling real empowerment to achieve social impact of immeasurable value for communities in Massachusetts and across the globe.

“The MassTLC Education Foundation has worked closely with the MIT App Inventor team for years, making coding more accessible for kids through Technovation and other programs,” said MassTLC CEO Tom Hopcroft. “MIT App Inventor is having an impact well beyond Massachusetts, making coding accessible to everyone from U.S. Marines to refugees. They’ve lowered the technical barriers, enabling people around the globe to innovate, solve problems and capture new opportunities.”

At the Gala, MassTLC will present special awards to Sir Tim Berners-Lee and Melissa James, as well as naming winners in 14 additional award categories including: CEO of the Year, CTO of the Year, Emerging Executive of the Year, Company of the Year, Emerging Company of the Year, Building a Better Workforce, Cutting Edge Technology of the Year, Technology for a Better Tomorrow, and Innovative Technology of the Year awards for Consumer Tech, Financial Tech, IoT, Robotics, Security, and Sales & Marketing.
