United States Senator Edward Markey joined with hundreds of technology leaders at the Seaport World Trade Center Boston ballroom to celebrate the vibrancy of the Massachusetts technology community at the 20th annual Mass Technology Leadership Awards. Known as the Academy Awards for Tech in Massachusetts, the 2017 Gala was held at the Seaport World Trade Center Boston.
At the Gala, MassTLC presented special awards to Sir Tim Berners-Lee, Melissa James and the MIT App Inventor team, as well as naming winners in 14 additional award categories including: CEO of the Year, CTO of the Year, Emerging Executive of the Year, Company of the Year, Emerging Company of the Year, Building a Better Workforce, Cutting Edge Technology of the Year, Technology for a Better Tomorrow, and Innovative Technology of the Year awards for Consumer Tech, Financial Tech, IoT, Robotics, Security, and Sales & Marketing. See who won in all categories.
Looking out at the see of faces and feeling the energy in the room, the Senator remarked that “this room proves that Massachusetts is the hub for tech leadership.” Addressing honoree Sir Tim Berners-Lee, the Senator remarked that the creation of the World Wide Web was the most successful communications medium in history. He noted that Time Magazine had put together a list of the 100 greatest minds of the 20th century with the likes of Freud and the Wright Brothers, and that Sir Tim was right there among these giants of the 20th century.
The Senator noted that the first hearing he held upon regaining his chairmanship of the Senate Telecommunications Committee in 2007 was on the World Wide Web and the only witness he called to present was Sir Tim Berners-Lee. The world we live in today is the result of his innovation and perseverance. The Senator felt it important to share his accolades and celebrate with the tech community as we honored Sir Tim and the many other innovators and tech leaders at the gala.
