Describe the pivot/transformation that led to the Tech Top 50 recognition.

Our team at SplitSpot was already set up as remote-first, so when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, we were immediately able to dedicate our focus to making the entire rental experience remote-first and fast-track our capabilities for virtual apartment showings. During already trying times, SplitSpot found a way to make moving to a new city and finding an apartment to rent a less stressful experience.

With many airlines canceling flights and face-to-face interaction limited, the development of our virtual apartment showings allowed prospective renters to tour different properties from their home. Virtual showings also allow prospective out-of-state renters to view properties without the hassle and cost of travel plans. It also eases the worries of renters who would otherwise move into the apartment without ever seeing the property beforehand. Virtual showings are not only beneficial for prospective renters, but ensure safety of SplitSpot employees who assist with apartment showings. Current residents also appreciate virtual showings, since they don’t need to be bothered or put at risk when a prospective tenant tours the unit.

With the unexpected nature of the COVID-19 pandemic, SplitSpot understands the flexible needs of its customers and the reality that plans could change at any time. We also understand that rent is the largest expense millennials pay each year and many are forced to agree to 12 month leases with unknown roommates and high upfront costs. To address the need for flexibility, SplitSpot solidified a lease policy to allow for any unexpected changes that may occur. SplitSpot offers 4 month minimum leases with extensive background checks, no realtor fees, and low upfront costs.

What impact did the pivot/transformation have?

Our goal when creating SplitSpot was to make renting in cities easy, accessible, and flexible. We’ve been able to build a trusted platform that provides flexible apartment room rentals to tenants, and a marketing, sales, and tenant management solution for property owners. Choosing to develop a virtual platform ultimately made us a better company by focusing on convenience, ease, and safety of customers and landlords. Our customers now have the opportunity to view properties that are located miles away, therefore they save money and time that can instead be put towards finding the next place they call home.

The pandemic has led to a much broader acceptance of virtual tools like ours. The success of our virtual showings opened the door to working with landlords and property managers who were previously hesitant to this type of technology. However, they have now realized how much these virtual tools can save time, as well as increase their flexibility and apartment marketability with tools like sophisticated 3D cameras that allow us to create an exact digital model of the apartment and provide a seamless virtual walkthrough. With technology already a major part of our everyday lives, we have been able to reshape how renters go about apartment hunting by allowing them to have access to all they need right at their fingertips.

What does it mean to be recognized with the other Tech Top 50 honorees?

Being recognized alongside our fellow Tech Top 50 honorees excites the SplitSpot team and elevates the company. We’re honored to be in the same company as all of them. This award recognition also opens up opportunities for connections between the honorees and the broader tech community, giving us a platform to discuss the issues both companies and consumers are facing in a post-COVID world.
