Over the course of the next few weeks, we’ll be sharing more about each of the recipients to spotlight their accomplishments and their impact on customers, partners, employees, and the broader community.

How did your CEO lead or support their team in a unique way?

Far before “empathic leadership” became a trending topic, Progress CEO Yogesh Gupta epitomized the management style. His principled leadership sets the tone for how the business operates, including how employees engage with customers—and each other.

Thanks to Yogesh, employees have a voice at Progress. He values their input and uses it to guide decision making. When Future of Work planning was underway, Yogesh repeatedly surveyed employees to gauge their desire to return to the office. After thoughtful consideration with his senior team, Progress adopted an employee-choice approach that freed staff to consult with their managers and determine how and where they preferred to work going forward.

Trust this strong is founded on solid relationships, ones Yogesh cultivates at every opportunity. Whether during company All Hands meetings, chats on Yammer or Microsoft Teams, or informal conversations as he makes tea in the kitchen, employees know Yogesh is an accessible leader who values human connection. This foundation makes his authentic concern during times of crisis—like hurricanes, war or the recent pandemic—that much more appreciated. Progress people know that in Yogesh, they have a CEO who truly cares. It’s one of the many reasons employees are “ProgressPROUD” of their company and its impressive CEO.

What measurable outcomes exist because of the support and leadership this CEO provided?

Despite the pandemic and the great resignation, Progress continues to meet or exceed the company’s financial guidance. This, while maintaining unusually high employee retention. Fiscal year 2022 revenue is projected to be approximately $613M, representing 10% annual growth, with operating margins up 39%. In response, the employee base has understandably increased from 1,800 to roughly 2,100 in the last two years, via both organic growth and M&A. Acquisitions are a key pillar of the Progress Total Growth Strategy. And true to company values, over 90% of recently acquired employees felt welcome at Progress post deal close.

This is likely because employees have confidence in Progress leaders, with senior leadership earning over 90% approval and Yogesh earning 92% approval in the January 2022 employee survey. Inclusion and belonging also scored high at 90%, with 90% of employees stating they were proud to be part of Progress. With scores this high, it’s no wonder Progress won 10 awards in 2022 alone for accomplishments in Corporate Social Responsibility and employee engagement. Notable wins included Inc.’s Best Workplaces list, Forbes Best Midsize Employers and ranking in the top 5 for the Boston Business Journal’s Best Place to Work, the latter for the second consecutive year.

Under Yogesh’s leadership, employer brand ratings on Glassdoor dramatically improved from a rating of 3.2 to a rating of 4.2, and CEO approval on Glassdoor improved from 58% to 85%. These measurable metrics attest to the outstanding leadership of Progress’ CEO.

What does it mean to have your CEO recognized with the other Tech Top 50 honorees?

Progress employees, known as “Progressers,” could not be more proud to have CEO, Yogesh Gupta, recognized among the Tech Top 50 honorees. It’s an amazing opportunity for the rest of the Massachusetts tech community to learn about the amazing leader employees see every day. His thoughtful leadership has been a steadying force for Progress and its employees during the last two years of global conflict, disruption and uncertainty. His success should be a model for other leaders to emulate, proof that people can thrive, companies can prosper, all while making a positive change in local communities and the world.
